Mentors needed in Devon

Description

About us
TEMPO is a non-profit community organisation based in Barnstaple. We create safe, inclusive spaces where young people aged 11–16 are trusted to take ownership of their own development — at their own pace, in their own way. There's no curriculum, no set targets, and no pressure to fit a mould.
TEMPO Hub is our new mentoring hub, running for 10 hours per week during term time. We're looking for two Mentors to help bring it to life. Although not an 'adventure' position, this would likely suit an outdoor instructor or coach who enjoys working with young people but is looking for a different role and challenge to go alongside their other freelance work.
The role
This is a relational role at its heart. You'll be the consistent, trusted adult for a small group of young people — supporting them to set meaningful goals, navigate challenges, figure out who they are and what they're capable of. You'll listen well, ask good questions, and share your own passions and experience. It's a role for someone who finds young people genuinely interesting — who wants to invest in real relationships and sees that as the work itself, not a means to an end.
The details
Hours 12 hours per week for 12 weeks (term time)
Contract Freelance (12-week pilot — with a permanent role possible if the Hub continues)
Start 16 September 2026
Location Barnstaple, Devon
Salary £15-£25 per hour dependent on experience
DBS Enhanced DBS with Children's Barred List (required)
What we're looking for
We're looking for people with significant experience supporting young people's learning or wellbeing.
You'll bring:
Warmth, maturity, and the ability to build genuine trust with young people aged 11–16
A real belief in young people's right to direct their own learning
Passions, interests, or expertise of your own that you'd love to share
A solid understanding of safeguarding and your duty of care
Resilience, adaptability, and a reflective approach to your own practice
Experience with SEND, EHCPs, or neurodiversity is a real advantage. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds — we're actively looking to build a diverse team.
