Raleigh International is recruiting Volunteer Medics to join our Expeditions and support our sustainable development projects. If you have 2+ years experience post-qualification as a doctor, nurse or paramedic and want to progress your  leadership and medical skills in an exciting environment, then we want to hear from you!

We organise projects improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene in rural communities, and delivering environmental preservation work in vulnerable areas. We achieve this whilst supporting young people to build their skills and confidence. As a Medic you will have an essential role facilitating the development of our young people whilst ensuring the safe and impactful delivery of all projects. Raleigh International is delivering Expeditions to Nepal and Costa Rica throughout 2022.

You will:

  • Look after the general health of volunteers and manage any medical emergencies where necessary
  • Lead and facilitate different volunteer groups out on our project sites as a Project Medic, or remotely support the safe running all our teams and projects from our central field base in Kathmandu or Turrialba as a Country Office Medic
  • Be part of the central operations team that responds to incidents
  • Encourage and motivate the volunteers to effectively deliver their projects while helping to foster their own personal development
  • Deliver first aid training at the beginning of the programme
  • Experience living in a completely new and exciting environment
  • Be actively involved in projects organised in partnership with local communities, NGOs and environmental groups

When can I join?

We are recruiting for Expeditions throughout 2022, with placements between 8 and 13 weeks beginning in or around January, June and September.

For full dates and details, please visit our Medics page at https://raleighinternational.org/take-action/volunteer/medics/

You must have at least two years post-qualification experience, and medical skills that are transferable to remote static environments. We will ask you to submit a fundraising target for our programmes, however this covers all expenses when you are in-country as well as the cost of running our projects worldwide. This will be between £800 and £1600 depending on your role and experience, and are the most subsidised of all our volunteer costs given the specialist skills you are bringing.

Expenses covered by this include:

  • All food and accommodation
  • All in-country travel
  • Travel and medical insurance (excluding personal belongings cover)
  • Pre-departure training including a residential weekend, live online webinar and online learning platform
  • At least two weeks training in-country before volunteers arrive
  • All group medical equipment
  • Access to alumni network and events on return

Regarding COVID-19:

We are closely monitoring the global situation surrounding the outbreak and will continue to regularly review and provide updates of any changes made to these planned Expeditions.

We are planning a number of potential changes to ensure we are able to operate safely, such as testing pre-departure and on arrival, maintaining social distancing on programmes, and enhancing medical response protocols so that you and we can respond to any suspected cases of coronavirus in a locally appropriate, responsible, and effective manner. We will of course share with you what your responsibilities as a Medic will look like on an Expedition in light of these changes.

What previous Medics said:

“I had a very positive experience and because Raleigh has established relationships in-country, dedicated in-country staff and comprehensive procedures they are a good organisation to work with, especially for a first time experience... Their organisational values are a good measure to judge other NGOs, and for older students in the audience, age is no barrier. Raleigh is held in high regard by other organisations around the world and my time with you has helped my career enormously.” - Nicholas, Nepal

“I am sure that my experience with Raleigh International has and continues to help me manage in difficult situations. I remain very grateful to the time I spent with Raleigh as it taught me patience and to manage whatever situation is thrown at me.” - Lisa, Costa Rica

“My mentor from the tropical nursing diploma had gained her first experience with Raleigh back in the 80’s. It has proved to be a great first taste of life in remote nursing, and also working within an international NGO.” - Claire, Nepal
