We are in the early stages of an exciting journey to become an innovative leader in sustainability in travel. We want to shape our business in line with the global sustainability challenges, to tackle the negative impact of our being in business, and to explore ways in which we can have a positive impact on our customers, the destinations in which we operate, the industry, and the wider debate around sustainability and travel.
We are now looking for an in-house Sustainability Manager to drive the sustainability programme - initially on a 6 month contract but with a view to it becoming a permanent role.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Manager Director and with support from the company’s Sustainability Advisor, you’ll be responsible for the Sustainability Plan: its development (in support of the Sustainability objectives), delivery and measurement.
You’ll shape the sustainability projects themselves, ensuring they are robust, innovative, commercially-minded and true to the principles of sustainable development. And you’ll find ways of delivering them in an entrepreneurial way, with support from the internal team and external experts where needed. You’ll play a key role in the sustainability strategy, and in proposing and deciding the projects that will support it. You will ensure they are not only aligned with the broader business goals, but carefully measured and monitored to ensure they’re delivering maximum impact.
You’ll be the internal sustainability champion, supporting, challenging and engaging the business in driving the change it seeks, and ensuring all its activities and messaging support the ambitions to be a leader.
You’ll be a sustainability spokesperson and advocate for the business, supporting the raising of the profile of the sustainability efforts of the business, among peers, the wider industry and partners.
Who you’ll be
You are passionate about sustainability and have a powerful drive to play a positive role in shaping a better world. You have solid experience of driving sustainability programmes in a commercial (ideally SME / entrepreneurial) context, and of contributing to strategic planning. You will be a self-starter, happy to operate without close management, willing to roll up sleeves to ‘get stuff done’ and comfortable with collaborating with and challenging team members at all levels. You are confident in being an external voice for the business, and have the maturity and gravitas to command respect from key stakeholders.
You have strong networks in the world of sustainability (and, ideally, travel) and know how to orchestrate resources - internal and external - to get things done.
You can move at speed, and have a predisposition to go with ‘good enough’, while always maintaining the longer view. Your approach to sustainability is entrepreneurial: challenging received wisdoms; testing and learning; innovating; drawing upon emergent thinking and research.
It is second nature to craft and deliver an annual programme of work, and to juggle the demands of several threads running concurrently.
