Secret Compass is a Bristol-based expedition and adventure travel company, our ambitious projects seek to achieve the extraordinary in the world’s wildest places.

Over the last decade we have completed world-first trekking, packrafting and mountain biking expeditions across the globe, in locations as diverse as South Sudan, North Korea, Afghanistan, DRC and Panama’s infamous Darien Gap, and supported a growing slate of TV and Film projects across the world spanning the breaking news, drama, natural history, reality TV and factual genres.

As the company continues to grow, Secret Compass is recruiting a Health and Safety Advisor to assist us in developing our Health and Safety advice service across our range of activities.

Outline of Role

The successful candidate will help support our range of clients with their Health and Safety needs. This will involve assessing projects and developing comprehensive risk management plans, developing and reviewing risk assessments, safety plans and advising clients on acceptance of risk.

The role will also take over responsibility for the continuous monitoring and development of efficient processes to ensure Secret Compass continues to provide the best possible support to our clients.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Health and Safety Policy. Assist  on company health and safety policies.
  • Risk Assessments. Assist with the development and review of RAs in conjunction with project managers, guides, consultants and Directors.
  • Health and Safety Advice. Assist with health and safety specific advice to clients.

Core criteria

The successful candidate will have a diploma level Health and Safety qualification. You may be at the start of your career and looking for a role where you can develop and take on more responsibility, or you may be an established H&S professional searching for new challenges in a varied and interesting workplace.

This role requires a dynamic, fast moving, adaptable and flexible individual who takes a positive, solution-oriented approach to problem solving. Good report writing and a studious attention to detail is essential and we are particularly looking for candidates who are organised and efficient, with excellent time management skills. In addition, the candidate will be highly personable and client-facing, and have experience at building both internal and external relationships.

Whilst experience of health and safety in a production setting is not essential, understanding the unique needs and approaches required within the industry is an advantage. Similarly candidates who have professional or personal experience of, or interest in, working in remote outdoor environments or of the outdoor industry, would be of interest and this should be highlighted within the application form. A working knowledge of ISO3100 and/or BS8848 is also advantageous but not essential.
